I did promise to post updates from time to time on the progress with publishing Worship Leading Essentials. Not a huge amount has been happening for a while, but it seems now there is a publisher who might be interested!

Obviously, that’s quite exciting, but there is a more daunting side to it. They have sensibly pointed out that the book quotes from a number of song lyrics, and all such quotations need permission from the rights owners. Most other quotations used in a non-fiction book like mine are covered by what is called ‘fair use’. In other words, you can quote small amounts freely as long as each quote is properly attributed with correct author and publisher information. Song lyrics however are not covered under fair use, and will all need permissions.

They have also suggested that in a few places I need to re-draft sections to reflect the impact of the pandemic on worship and worship leading. The book was first completed in late spring last year, and hence makes only passing reference to coronavirus. Again this is a useful suggestion and will improve the value of the finished book.

Although this feels like genuine progress, the process of traditional publishing (rather than self-publishing) is likely to take some time. Although this publisher has an admirable goal of publishing fairly quickly, I would imagine the reality is that a 2022 publication date is more likely than 2021, even if everything goes forward without major problems.
